Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GORD)

Understanding GORD in Babies and Children

It’s normal for babies to bring up milk or “posset” after a feed — their digestive systems are still developing, and this is usually nothing to worry about. This common, harmless reflux is known as gastro-oesophageal reflux (GOR).

However, when reflux becomes frequent, painful, or causes complications, it may be a sign of Gastro-oesophageal Reflux Disease (GORD) — a condition that needs proper assessment and management.

At Paediatric Gut Investigation Clinic in Crawley, West Sussex, we specialise in investigating and treating GORD in babies, children, and young people. Our goal is to help your child feel comfortable again — and to give you peace of mind.

We also provide full investigation and treatment for Gastroesophageal Reflux (GOR), which is more common and less severe than GORD.

Treatment for Paediatric Gastroesophageal Reflux (GOR) and Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GORD)

What is GORD?

GORD occurs when stomach contents repeatedly flow back into the oesophagus (the food pipe), causing irritation or inflammation. While mild reflux often improves as a baby grows, persistent symptoms can interfere with feeding, sleep, and growth.

Common signs of GORD include:

  • Frequent vomiting or regurgitation after feeds
  • Irritability, crying, or arching the back during or after feeding
  • Refusal to feed or poor appetite
  • Poor weight gain or faltering growth
  • Chronic cough, wheezing, or hoarse voice
  • Older children may describe heartburn, chest discomfort, or a sour taste in the mouth

Investigations at Our Clinic

Our private clinic offers comprehensive diagnostic testing to identify the cause and severity of reflux. Depending on your child’s symptoms, we may recommend:

  1. pH or impedance studies to measure acid and non-acid reflux episodes
  2. Endoscopy to assess inflammation or structural issues in the oesophagus or stomach
  3. Allergy and intolerance testing, if food sensitivities are suspected
  4. Specialist feeding assessments, working alongside dietitians and speech therapists

Our investigations are gentle, child-centred, and carried out by experienced paediatric gastroenterology specialists who understand how to make young patients feel safe and at ease.

Treatment and Support

Once we’ve identified the cause, we’ll create a personalised treatment plan for your child. This may include:

  • Adjustments to feeding or diet
  • Advice on positioning and routines
  • Medication to reduce stomach acid or improve motility
  • Referral to allied specialists if needed

Our team is committed to supporting you every step of the way, from first consultation to follow-up care — ensuring your child gets the right help for long-term comfort and health.
